History
Formation
Oman National Transport Company is the public bus
and coach operator in the Sultanate and begun
operations in June 1975.
The basis of forming the Oman National Transport
Company (ONTC) in 1972 was to provide school bus
transport: the Government was originally in
partnership with a prominent local citizen in this
venture.
In 1984, the company was reformed under Royal
Decree 59/84 and enfranchised to operate public
bus services throughout the Sultanate. It is owned
by the Government holding 99.98% shares and
operates under the supervision of the Ministry of
Communications: the remaining shares are equally
held by Oman Development Bank and Post Services
Corporation. It has a Board of Directors and an
Executive Committee both under the Chairmanship of
Engineer Khalid Abdulla Bakatheer, Chairman of the
Ministers Office, Ministry of Transport and
Communications. It functions through the General
Manager. The company operates in stiff competition
with other transport operators and against private
motoring.
History
By early 1974, orders has been placed for 64 buses
and 05 coaches and also at the same time land had
been allocated at Azaiba for the construction of a
bus depot: Azaiba is close to Seeb International
Airport and about 30 kms from the centre of the
capital.
By early 1975 Dodge buses and Barrieros coaches
from USA were delivered; operating staff and
workshop staff were recruited and at the same time
the garages, offices and staff accommodation were
developed.
The principle of providing schools transport was
then postpones in favour of operating conventional
bus services and contract works transport. By June
1975, the company had secured a long-term contract
to provide transport four times daily for the
employees of Port Services Corporation (the
nation’s major port, at Mutrah)
